Welcome to the Summer Solstice, bringing the peak of summer’s light as the Sun leaves verbal Gemini and enters Cancer tonight, June 20, at 8:42 PM. The Sun in Cancer calls us back home to our personal shell for family picnics and hometown gatherings, back for personal karmic work.
This year, though we’ll still have potato salad and sunset games, check in on family and old friends, the outer transits unsettle us and ask us to work on the bigger questions. What actually makes us safe and sound, what is our vision of a greater country and a better life.
After tonight, the Sun, Jupiter, and Mercury are all in Cancer. Cancer’s symbol is a crab, a creature that is soft and squishy on the inside, hard with claws on the outside — defensive geniuses because they feel so much and dive so deep. Wonderful as long as we don’t get stuck in the swamp. Cancer energy encourages us to tend to our emotional, philosophical, and logistical homes. But it can also make it really hard to engage in healthy challenging conversations and negotiations unless people willingly put down their claws and guard their sensitive underbellies differently. Watch for nationalistic claw waving, the continued agonizing boundary crossings in the Mideast and at all points of conflict, as well as long public debates about what actually creates safety.
At this unusual point in history- an archetypal turning point- five outer planets change signs within a year. This puts them all at very early degrees of the signs, all bouncing energy off one another. When, as the Sun does this week and the Moon does every few days, a faster moving planet changes signs, it rings this pattern like an autoharp chord and all the planets talk together at once, sending us wildly conflicting energetic signals. There are 30° to a sign. Right now, Jupiter is at 2° of Cancer, Mars at 2° of Virgo, Pluto at 3° Aquarius, Saturn and Neptune at 1 and 2° of Aries, Uranus is now at the last degree of Taurus but will be at 0° Gemini by July 7th. It is a time of outrageous change, a time to expect the unexpected. But think of opportunity within the crisis, look for the opportunity and follow that lead. Feel those cross currents and choose carefully what to tune into.
We’ll have a bit less fire this week than last as Mars- planet of energy, action, war, sexuality, heroism, and temper, has left fiery Leo and is now in pragmatic Virgo, but that Mars takes the heat from other planets. It is the point of a yod, quincunx Saturn and Neptune on one side, and quincunx Pluto on the other. Mars is also sextile Jupiter, giving it more juice. Mars energizes and questions the right use of our Mars, our machismo, our military force, our personal set of healthy boundaries. What is the difference between strength and aggression, between leadership and oppression, what is the role of resistance and rebellion. Stay strong.
Friday begins under a feisty Aries Moon, but the Moon joins Venus in Taurus in the evening, helping us settle into a more grounded, potentially tasty, and delicious weekend.
Sunday night the Moon switches to Gemini; we have those tricky aspects early in the week but the conversation rolls. Keep people talking rather than hide behind defenses. Open up the conversation and keep it moving. Tuesday, that Sun conjuncts Jupiter and can bring some expanded possibilities. Midweek, the Cancer New Moon investigates all those deeply Cancerian questions about home, self, safety, and new beginnings.
Friday, June 20: Deal with a burst of restless frustration this morning, if anyone looks like they are a pressure cooker beginning to steam, back off and give them room. Some conflicts will escalate. Our fuses are short, but the anger doesn’t need to run deep as Mars quincunx Neptune under a feisty Aries Moon. Watch for disinformation and confusion midday; some intend to deceive, some just believe their own stories. Magic and camaraderie build towards this shortest night as the Sun enters Cancer. Honor alignment and feel the connection at this globally- shared moment.

Saturday, June 21: Take it outside and develop a relationship to the natural world on this first full day of summer as the earthy Taurus Moon sextiles Jupiter in the morning, squares Pluto midday, and conjuncts Venus tonight. It will help with the deep moody energy humming underneath with a couple of uncomfortable astrological quincunx. Let people participate at their own rate. A temporary disappointment midday does not need to ruin progress, stay flexible and prioritize people, not plans. Watch possessiveness or territoriality, neither give in nor tease it; respect the strange emotional tugs and ask what reassurance would help.

Sunday, June 22: Those cross currents could bring a wild variety of headlines and experience. A nice stable Taurus Moon soothes us as the Sun squares Saturn and asks us to be mature grown-ups but can also remind us of the constraints of our world. An irritating Mars-Pluto quincunx adds fuel to long-running challenges and conflicts, so think carefully where to turn up the heat and where to diffuse the situation. We lose focus later; our mind can scatter but we’ll still want to make our point. Explore options, we can work around disagreements if we openly communicate as the Moon conjuncts both Jupiter and Uranus then enters talkative Gemini tonight.

Monday, June 23: Notice interesting dreams overnight, our conscious brain may be foggy, but our sub-conscious works overtime as the Sun squares Neptune and the Moon squares Mars. Let the coffee sink in, and any new shifts in reality, before pushing forward. This fogginess can hit our weather, our minds, or create an obscuring fog about what is going on. Clarify and check all rumors. Honor people looking for the truth and set clear boundaries with those that only want to back up their opinion. If someone winds out on a suspicion or concern, instead of hooking onto the content, speak to the fear, the nerves. Speak to the real concerns underneath the story.

Tuesday, June 24: Bizarrely mixed aspects can neutralize each other out or create wild scenarios. The Sun conjuncts expansive, optimistic Jupiter, but they both sextile militant Mars and all three form an irritating quincunx to power-broking Pluto. If an old sore point gets triggered, practice self-control and tap into the Jupiterian opportunities rather than add fuel to fires. Notice the strangely competitive aspect, but this could play out dramatically in places of conflict or power struggle or could reveal hidden information. Control those obsessions and tap into that Sun Jupiter hopeful expansion instead.

Wednesday, June 25: The new Moon in Cancer this morning at 4:31 AM MDT gives us an opportunity to start a new cycle of self-care, nurturance, and potential coziness. It’s a good day for a home improvement project, make it a sacred act of reclaiming home. The same goes for improvement projects on our homeland. Some people may need reassurance and appreciation to bring out their best. Our defenses trigger easily, both personally and internationally, but that’s not the seed we want to plant this round. Feed hunger instead. The momentum of the day begins to wander late afternoon, share love and nurturing foods under this new Moon if it’s hard to build up energy elsewhere.

Thursday, June 26: Look for movement on formerly blocked projects, run with a green light as Mercury sextiles Uranus helps us change minds and shift gears. The Sun sextiles Mars, energizing us, rushing us, and sharpening our edges. After a final logistical critique this afternoon, swap stories late into the night as Mercury enters theatrical Leo and brings out our more sociable, creative edge. Just watch for the ego stories told in the public eye. Take everything with a grain of fictional salt.
