This next week is an action movie. Our society’s adrenaline is still pumping, our histamines up, ready for a big change or a rumble as Jupiter, a planet that expands whatever it touches, now squares Mars, symbolic of our temper, our military, our machismo and our ability to act.
These energizing aspects give us a green light to leap forward on many projects and we can really make things happen in the next few weeks. Let’s clear the decks now, because we will have to go back and clean up or complete old work as Mercury turns retrograde January 30 for three weeks. Mercury will send us back to fix old problems, investigate previous crimes, and pick up the threads of our life that we might have dropped this last year. …

We have a new sun rising, a new chapter beginning this week as Mars conjuncts Uranus on inauguration day. Vulnerability and belligerence, friendship and service, these are all undertones of this week, while restless change and strong opinions manifest outwardly.
As the weekend begins everybody is a talking head, discussing politics, philosophy, and their theories on what happened or will happen as we prepare for Martin Luther King Day and the presidential Inauguration while mental Mercury in theoretical Aquarius conjuncts prolific Jupiter, though it can be easier to talk about the world’s condition than about our personal feelings. Layers of ambient anxiety, excitement, and concern about the future (no matter our politics) can leave us feeling vulnerable, and this can create secondary anger or exhaustion. …

Dynamic changes are in the works as three planets change signs. Mars left Aries after six irascible months with a final dramatic flare (and a solar flare) in Washington on Wednesday and entered Taurus as the senate finally affirmed the vote for the new president. Mental Mercury enters collaborative Aquarius and Venus enters pragmatic Capricorn today; all this helps our moods calm down, our stubbornness and determination increase, and can open our mind if we let it.
We’re not over our irascibility completely; as the weekend begins Mercury forms an irritating square to Mars which can entrench stubborn debates. As the Moon is now in Scorpio, the sign that never forgets, just watch the accusations fly. The Moon shifts to more humorous Sagittarius over the weekend as Mercury conjuncts serious Saturn, a wonderfully competent organizational aspect that can really help us get ourselves together for this next season, though the weights of the world lean in on us. …

As 2021 begins the planets ask us to think about how we define community, our people, our circle, what philosophy and vision guides us, and what are our personal and collective responsibilities. Jupiter and Saturn, the two arbiters of social consciousness, conjunct in the communal fixed air-sign Aquarius in December, started a new 20-year cycle, square change-inducing Uranus several times in the year ahead, and set the tone for the year ahead.
Aquarius calls us to expand our horizon, to think idealistically, philosophically, globally, but act locally. The trap can be to see everything through the filter of our philosophy and lose the ability to see what’s really going on. To bring out Aquarius’s gift we need to keep it authentic and responsive and get really honest with ourselves. This Aquarius line-up demands we incorporate multiple points of view to develop a healthy, flexible philosophy that pulls us out of the pettiness of the single story. …

2020 is almost over and we are so ready for a change. This week Mercury and the Sun both form an engaging trine to change-master Uranus, a planet which acts like a cosmic clutch to help us shift gears for the new year ahead.
We’ll see this promise of difference hover today as the Sun rises a tad earlier, offering us evidence that spring will eventually arrive. …

As if we’ve turned the corner around the Cape of Good Hope and are now sailing into different seas, changes that kicked in last week on the solar eclipse as the electoral college voted- now pick up speed through the end of January.
To support our hearts in this process, let’s look up in the western sky at night and watch the approaching Jupiter-Saturn conjunction. …

On any clear evening, in the west, just after sunset look for Jupiter and Saturn as they grow closer together. Pluto still hovers invisibly nearby, between them and the western horizon, but they are finally pulling away from Pluto after a year-long square-dance. Saturn enters Aquarius this week, Jupiter enters Aquarius next week, and they conjunct on the winter solstice.
These two planets conjunct every 20 years and are associated with turning points in socio-political eras. Jupiter and Saturn are the largest of the planets by far, and they are associated with the big social political tensions, they represent two poles that we balance between. Like every other aspect of astrology, each planet has its gift and challenge. Saturn with its rings is connected to maturity, restriction, conservativism, what we grow over time, our bones, teeth, and our relationship to authority. Jupiter is connected to expansion, gratitude, abundance, enabling, privilege, overwhelm. …

We’re completing a major astrological cycle as Jupiter and Saturn finish their last few weeks in Capricorn, enter Aquarius mid-month, and conjunct on the winter solstice. Both in politics and our personal life expect to polish off the dregs of old cycles, complete old patterns, solve puzzles. Neptune in Pisces (this decade) and Venus in Scorpio (these few weeks) leave us psychically sensitized, so we may also be processing the country’s generalized ambience of anxiety and irritability in this time of transition. If we’re not careful, this tension can leak through into our more tender relationships. …

The stars ask us to take a deep breath, rest, get ourselves healthy this post-holiday weekend and ready to engage the changing times ahead. Now through the end of January is a pivot point between astrological and political eras, time to repair, restore, prepare, and get our ships turned in a good direction. The Sun is waking up from an unusually long solar minimum which improves short wave radio frequencies and builds momentum behind political and social changes. Jupiter and Saturn enter Aquarius in December and conjunct around the winter solstice, beginning a new sociopolitical cycle. We are going to be busy this next year. …

The winds are shifting. We’ll become more consciously cheerful but potentially secretly even more broody this week as the Sun enters outgoing Sagittarius on Saturday while Venus enters introspective Scorpio at the same time. While we can feel a new enthusiasm and look forward to the future, our hearts can perseverate over some old resentments or new obsessions, and that emotional torque needs to be directed carefully. …
